Media Reporting Says Miami Heat Intend to Waive Terry Rozier

  • Media reports indicate Miami Heat are set to move on from Terry Rozier
  • Rozier charged last fall after federal investigation into illegal gambling
  • No trial date set as of yet for Rozier

The Miami Heat are moving on from Terry Rozier, under investigation by federal authorities over gambling allegations and currently away from the team, according to ESPN and the Miami Herald. Reporting said the team intends to waive the guard before the NBA playoffs start.

Arrested in October

Rozier has pleaded not guilty to federal conspiracy charges of wire fraud and money laundering. There is no trial date.

According to Spotrac Rozier’s salary this season was $26.6 million, the last year of a four-year contract he signed with the Charlotte Hornets in 2022. Rozier isn’t being paid while on leave due to the FBI investigation.

By waiving Rozier, the Heat would create a roster spot for a playoff run. The National Basketball Players Association appealed that decision to withhold his salary.

$26.6 Million Salary

The other issue is compensation coming to the Heat, since some say the team should have been made aware of investigations into Rozier when the Hornet traded him to Miami in 2024. Earlier in March the Hornets announced they were sending a 2026 second-round draft pick to the Heat to solve the dispute between the two teams.

NBA commissioner Adam Silver said in December that this was a unique situation, and some kind of relief would have to be sent Miami’s way. Miami still owes Charlotte a first-round draft pick in either 2027 or 2028 as part of the original trade.

Still No Trial Date

Rozier would need to be waived by 5 p.m. EST on April 9 to clear waivers. The NBA regular season ends April 12.

Rozier was arrested in October for his alleged involvement in an illegal gambling scheme. His lawyers, led by James Trusty and A. Jeff Ifrah, argued in a motion to dismiss in December that the government overreach boiled down to turning a private dispute over bettors’ use of nonpublic information for sports betting purposes into a federal case.

Prosecutors allege that Rozier worked with bettors while he was a member of the Hornets by deliberately pulling himself out of an NBA game in March 2023, due to a foot issue, less than 10 minutes after play started. Authorities claim he left the game so that he and the bettors he was working with could cash in on $200K worth of prop betting around Rozier-related unders that game.
